About Panels and Relays
The protection relays monitor current and voltage and command the opening of the circuit breaker in the event of faults. The most common functions are ANSI 50/51 overcurrent (phase) and 50N/51N (neutral/ground), with advanced models offering directional, undervoltage (27), overvoltage (59), and IEC 61850 communication for substation automation.
The selection considers the magnitude to be protected (feeder, transformer, motor, generator), the required set of ANSI functions, and SCADA integration. Relays follow IEC 60255.
Frequently asked questions
What do ANSI 50 and 51 functions mean?
50 is instantaneous overcurrent and 51 is time-delay overcurrent; 50N/51N are the versions for ground fault (neutral).
Do I need IEC 61850 communication?
Recommended when there is substation automation/SCADA. Siemens 7SR and Schneider Easergy P5 models already offer it.
