Switchgear: Important in medium voltage installations

If you work with medium-voltage electrical installations, you've probably heard of the switchgear. But do you know exactly what it is, where it's used, and why it's essential for the safety and efficiency of the electrical system? In this article, we'll explain everything you need to know about this important component of the electrical infrastructure—and show how disconnectable terminals are part of it.

What is a maneuver chamber?

The switchgear is a technical compartment that houses equipment responsible for controlling, protecting, sectioning, or switching electrical circuits in medium-voltage networks, generally between 1 kV and 36 kV. It houses devices such as:

  • Circuit breakers
  • Disconnect switches
  • Fuses
  • Current and potential transformers
  • Busbars
  • Protection relays

The term "chamber" refers to the enclosed, protected space where these devices are installed. "Switching" refers to the electrical operations performed there—such as turning on, turning off, switching, or isolating parts of the system.

What is the purpose of the maneuver chamber?

The main function of the control room is to ensure the continuity and safety of electrical power distribution, even in situations of failure or maintenance. In other words, it allows operators to control the flow of power, isolating specific areas, protecting equipment, and ensuring the safe operation of the power grid.

Furthermore, it facilitates scheduled maintenance and prevents a single failure from causing interruptions throughout the installation.

Where is it used?

The switchgear is an essential item in various types of projects and facilities that operate with medium voltage. It is commonly found in:

  • Compact or conventional substations
  • Industries and large businesses
  • Supermarkets, shopping malls and hospitals
  • Residential condominiums and logistics centers
  • Agribusiness properties (such as pumping systems and pivots)

Most common types of maneuvering chambers

There are different types of control chambers, and the choice depends on the environment, application, and level of protection required. The main types are:

  1. Underground maneuvering chamber

Typically constructed of masonry or concrete, installed underground with access through covers. It's common in underground urban networks. Although it works well, it requires greater attention to ventilation and moisture protection.

  1. Armored metal chamber (cubicle)

This is the most modern, compact, and safe model. Also known as armored cubicle, is made of sheet metal and has separate internal compartments for each function (maneuvering, protection, measurement, etc.).

The big difference is the full armor against accidental contact and electric arcs, which significantly increases the operational safety. Furthermore, it offers greater durability, less maintenance, and faster installation. It's the ideal choice for industrial environments, shopping centers, and locations where safety is a priority.

What is the relationship between the control chamber and the disconnectable terminals?

A key element in the safe operation of the control room are the medium-voltage disconnect terminals. They connect the power cables to the room's equipment, such as transformers, switches, and circuit breakers, in a modular, safe, and pluggable manner.

Unlike conventional terminals, disconnectable terminals allow for easy electrical connections without the need for disassembly or direct access to live parts. They are usually elbow-type and fit into the equipment bushings with full insulation.

Within a shielded metal chamber, for example, disconnectable terminals are the best solution for connecting cables quickly and safely, facilitating maintenance, replacements, and maneuvers without compromising the integrity of the installation.
